Sneak Peek

I've sure been busy today...... Here's a sneak peek at what I've been doing.....

I was at a birthday party a few weeks ago for the assistant superintendent of schools and got to talking to the superintendent's wife about quilting and she mentioned how sh'e love a homemade quilt for the back of her couch. She asked me tons of questions about blocks etc. and asked what I'd charge. I didn't want to commit to anything because I've never done a customer quilt so I didn't say much. I decided over the days after that if my good friends would donate some log cabins and churn dash blocks that we'd done monthly on one of our yahoo groups then I'd make the top. Well, Robin so graciously sent me ALL of her blocks and told me to go at them so today I laid them out row by row and this is what I have so far..... Once I connect the rows, I'll add a thin neutral border and a wide red border (because the sups wife mentioned wanting red) and then I'll call her and ask her if she wants the top.... I don't know what I'll charge her yet but the borders will be from my stash and I have backing fabric so that's no big deal but I also don't want to NOT make a little something for my time.... and then there's the batting and quilting...... I'll have to figure it all out before I call her.......STAY TUNED!!

I like this! It was nice of your friend, Robin, to send you her blocks.I'm sure the sup's wife will love the quilt!

I met with my teacher friend this morning and we did some stamping. She's not a quilter. Then Pinelands Barb & I got together this afternoon & cut some on the All Roads/ section 8 . It was fun picking out the fabric for the general store/quilt store :) Then the roof and 2 new trees.

Looks really good, Peggy. I'm sure she'll love it. Don't you hate trying to figure out pricing for things you make? I always find that so difficult.

It is alway hard to price your things, you are afraid if you go to high no one will buy it but if you go to low then you lose money. Good luck and I love it!!!

Ooooh and ahhhh!! :) I love this. :) You have a good friend there to help you out with the blocks too!

You could also make the top for her, and refer her to a good longarmer who offers backing and batting, if you don't want to do it yourself. This might also give her an idea of what this type of work costs. Once people discover I quilt, they want me to make them one, but I don't know if they always understand the time and money that goes into them...and that materials alone cost an arm and a leg! :) I made a lap quilt for a Christmas gift (that what most quilters would think of more as a crib size) and bought all the fabric at Walmart for $2.75/yard and the batting was on sale 50% off. It still ended up costing $45 just for materials! Good luck, and don't sell yourself short because this is just gorgeous!!!

I love this layout of Log Cabin and Churn Dash blocks. I get tired just thinking about sewing all these rows together, adding the borders, batting, backing, and THEN deciding what to do about quilting. You deserve something in return, Peggy.
Let us know what you decide. It's always a tough decision for hand-made things.

Wow! I love this quilt! You are so creative!

I agree with the other commenters. It is so hard to price your work, and non-quilters have no idea! I used to date this guy, and he was always bugging me to make him a quilt. I made him one for his birthday and he said, "Wow! You must've spent like, $50 on this!" LOL!

Beautiful quilt! I'm sure she'll be pleased with it! I don't think non-quilters have a clue what costs there are in a quilt. I just did a lap quilt and for the batting and backing alone I spent about $30!
